Costume help

Picture
Need help? Here are some of the topics that we receive questions about frequently:
How do I choose the correct size?
Are costume orders refundable?
What if the costume is too big or small?
What are the fees, shipping fees, and taxes?
What is the order deadline?

Measuring, Sizing, Exchanges

Measuring
In an effort to go contactless this year with measuring for costumes, every family is responsible for taking their own measurements. This quick instructional video explains how to measure accurately. You will need the following measurements to place an order: Bust, Waist, Hips, and Girth.
sizing help
Each costume manufacturer uses a different size chart. You will find this size chart on your child's costume webpage; just scroll to the bottom of the page to find it.

Use your child’s measurement to pick the best size for your child and allow room for growth. If in doubt, always order up a size. All the costumes we choose are made specifically for dance recitals. They are generally made of fabric that stretches to allow for growth in height and weight. They come with straps that can be adjusted to various lengths. Our goal is to have a costume that fits your child well on the day of the show. It is a bonus if they can wear it for months/years to come, but no one can guarantee that.

Please note that the size of your child's costume may be different than their normal clothing size. Each costume company provides a very specific sizing chart that is used exclusively for their costumes. They do not necessarily coincide with store-bought clothing sizes. You will see the size chart online when you select your costume.

Dance costumes are made to order (they do not make them until they are ordered) but are not custom made for size. The measurements we take are used to determine the appropriate size (extra-small child through extra-large adult).
common mistakes
One common mistake is to choose a size that is too small. When consulting your size chart, if the measurements span two different sizes, always size up.  Additionally, if your child is due for a "growth spurt", consider ordering up a size.  It is always easier to alter a costume that is too large than too small.
size options
Costume manufacturers have started charging more for their adult and plus-size costumes. To avoid across-the-board cost increases, $5.00 - $20.00 will be added to adult, plus-size, and extended plus-size costumes.
too big/too small
When you receive your costume, please try it on your dancer as soon as possible. If the costume you ordered is too big, you may consider making alterations rather than exchanging the costume. The parent is responsible for any adjustments to the costume (i.e. attach straps or tack pieces with safety pins or needle/thread).

If the costume is the wrong size and cannot be altered, you may be able to make an exchange. Some extended sizes are made to order and cannot be changed or exchanged. See the Exchanges page for information on how to make an exchange.

Refunds, Payments, Taxes, Shipping and Fees

refunds
Once a costume is ordered it cannot be canceled, returned, or refunded. Exchanges can be made for size only. See Exchanges for more information.
payments
Costumes can be purchased online with Visa, Mastercard, and Discover card. Please see the Dance Etc. front desk staff if you need to pay with cash or a check.
taxes
Sales taxes are collected at your state's rate. We do not collect any handling fees or service fees.
shipping rates
Shipping from the manufacturer to your studio is included in your costume fees, if ordered by 12/20/22. After 12/20/22, costumes need to be shipped individually and will have a $10 shipping fee.
costume fees
Your total increases the longer you wait:
  • Orders prior to 12/4/22 start at $95* plus tax and will come with priority ticketing. (Account must be paid in full to purchase tickets).
  • Orders after 12/20/22 must be shipped individually and will have a $10 shipping fee added.
  • Adult, extended sizes, and two-in-one costumes will have a $5-$20 surcharge.
The costume fee includes:
  • Costume, tights (if applicable), hairpiece, and accessories as described.
  • Group shipping from the manufacturer to your studio (if ordered before 12/20/22).
  • A $10 participation fee that pays for the venue and associated costs.
  • A $10 administration fee.
*Two-in-one, adult and plus sized costumes are $5-$20 extra.

ordering deadlines

Order early! Generally, costumes take 12-16 weeks to arrive. This is because the costume companies service all the dance studios and most have recitals at similar times. Ordering early allows you to take advantage of discounts and allow time for exchanges of costume sizes if needed. We recommend that you order by December 20, 2022 to guarantee arrival by photo week. Please note: Due to supply chain issues, we cannot guarantee costumes can be purchased after 12/20/2022.

ordering status

You will receive an email when your order is placed. You will also receive an email after your costume has arrived at your studio for pickup.

Defective costumes or missing accessories

Any damaged or missing costumes, tights, or accessories must be reported to us within 5 days of receiving your shipment.
